Barbie, de modepop die inmiddels al decennia geleden uitgroeide tot een wereldwijd icoon, belichaamt alle toekomstdromen van generaties jonge meisjes. Voor het eerst in 64 jaar komt de iconische Barbiepop tot leven als ster van de live-actiefilm 'Barbie: The Movie', geregisseerd door Greta Gerwig en met Margot Robbie in de hoofdrol. De film heeft niet alleen een humoristisch en nostalgisch karakter, ook stipt het onderwerpen aan als anxiety en depressie. Ze beseft dat haar begrip van gender niet zo goed is als ze dacht en vind inderdaad dat er dingen moeten veranderen, in de 'echte' wereld én in Barbieland. Wanneer de rust is wedergekeerd in Barbieland, de Kens zich van hun idee van patriarchaat hebben ontdaan, en de Barbies de Kens ook de kans geven een eigen baan, huis en leven te vormen, blijft 'stereotype Barbie' hangen in haar existentiële gedachten.
